------Enlighten Me Please------

Enlighten me, please
just pass me a clue
I'm lost in a quandary
not sure what to do
I've pondered man's history
yet don't really feel pride
of mankind's endeavors
so many have died
From the earliest cavemen 
to Atilla the Hun
is killing and mayhem
justifiable fun
Down through the ages
from our dawn to our dusk
you find man killing man
for some insatiable lust
Napoleon or Hitler
Alexander the Great
the feared Ghengis Khan
killed for power or hate
The wars that man fought
some try to explain
that killing brings peace
regardless of pain
So my question is this
was man cursed from the start
a  legacy passed on
interred in our heart
to always exist
without true peace in our soul
imposing our will on others
for some lofty goal 
Killing and killing
til mankind's demise
a defective gene???
I wouldn't be surprised
our histories dark past
recorded in books and in granite
makes me wish I'd be born
on some different planet
